Functions of Yamuna Basin Organisation

Basic Functions

  • Observation, collection and compilation of Hydrological and Hydro-meteorological data for Yamuna and its tributaries
  • Maintaining & operating the Flood Forecasting Network for Flood Forecasting in Yamuna Basin rivers in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Further, inflow forecast in Chambal basin (Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) is also being done.
  • Water Quality monitoring and assessment in Yamuna Basin rivers.
  • Surveys, investigations and preparation of DPR of multipurpose & hydro-electric projects in Uttarakhand and Nepal.
  • Co-ordination of works of CWC in Nepal and Bhutan.
  • Monitoring of on-going Major & Medium Projects under AIBP, CAD&WM Projects and RRR Projects of  Rajasthan.
  • Appraisal of medium irrigation projects in Rajasthan.
  • To represent Ministry of Jal Shakti, DoWR, RD &GR / CWC in the regional Committees, Bodies etc.

Functions of  Offices under Yamuna Basin Organization:

  • Hydrological Observation Circle, Vaishali
    • The Circle Office with three Divisions, at New Delhi, Agra & Jaipur respectively, operates 142 Hydrological Observation Stations. At these stations, hydrological observations and collection and compilation of data regarding Gauge (G)/ Discharge (D)/ Sediment (S)/ Water Quality (Q), are being carried out. Flood Forecasting Activities are also carried out in the Yamuna Basin under Upper Yamuna Division, Delhi & Lower Yamuna Division (LYD), Agra. Inflow forecasting is being carried out by Chambal Division, Jaipur in Chambal Basin through Telemetry Networks. The Water Quality Laboratory LeveL-III & Level-II is operational in Kalindi Bhawan, New Delhi and LYD, Agra respectively.
    • Upper Yamuna Division (UYD), Delhi with four Sub-divisions operates 56 Hydrological Observation Stations.
    • Lower Yamuna Division (LYD), Agra with four Sub-divisions operates 54 Hydrological Observation Stations.
    • Chambal Division (CD), Jaipur with four Sub-divisions operates 32 Hydrological Observation Stations.
  • Planning Circle, Faridabad
    • The Circle Office with One Division namely Planning and Investigation Division at Faridabad operates 6 Hydrological Observations and Investigation work Stations.
  • Monitoring & Appraisal Directorate, Jaipur (Jurisdiction – Rajasthan)
    • General monitoring of ongoing irrigation projects.
    • Monitoring of projects implemented under AIBP.
    • Monitoring of works implemented under Flood Management Programme (FMP).
    • Monitoring of works executed under CAD&WM Programme.
    • Monitoring of works taken under Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of water bodies.
    • Appraisal of Medium and Minor Irrigation Project & Appraisal of Flood Management Schemes of medium category.
    • Preliminary appraisal of Irrigation & FMP Projects of Major category
    • Co ordination with the State Governments on matters relating to Monitoring and Appraisal and other issues referred by CWC / DoWR, RD &GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  • Nepal & Bhutan Co-ordination Directorate, Delhi
    • Nepal & Bhutan Coordination (N&BC) Directorate, Delhi is responsible for, coordination work related to Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan projects within CWC and with DoWR, RD &GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti, MEA, GSI, Survey of India, GFCC, CEA, Indian Embassies in Nepal & Bhutan, CWPRS and other concerned organizations on behalf of Central Water Commission and processing of cases relating to visits of officials to Nepal and Bhutan project works.
