IMO Function

Water Management:


  1. Monitoring live storage status of 91 important reservoirs of the country. A bulletin on the status of reservoirs storage under CWC monitoring system is being issued every week which contains current storage position vis-à-vis storage status on the corresponding day of the previous year and average of last 10 years on the corresponding day. Copy of the bulletin is sent to important offices including PMO.
  2. It is under process of covering more number of reservoirs under its monitoring in phased manner. Considering the demand from various stake holders, CWC has already initiated the process to increase the monitoring by 58 reservoirs over and above the 91 reservoirs under CWC monitoring making total of 149 reservoirs.
  3. Issues material for monthly Press release on Live Storage of important reservoirs in the country and sent to TC Dte., CWC, New Delhi for onward transmission to the Ministry.
  4. Providing material and attending weekly meetings of the Crop Weather Watch Group of the Ministry of Agriculture
  5. This is nodal Dte of IMO and receives material for regular returns like  Monthly Cabinet Summary, Monthly important activity, Fortnightly VIP Reference,  Monthly Court cases status, Hindi quarterly progress report, Annual report of CWC, Annual report of MoWR and many other coordination works of IMO from all Dtes under IMO and sends consolidated reply to concerned Dte of CWC
  6. Attending meetings Crisis Management Group under Ministry of Agriculture.
  7. Attending ICAR-CWC joint panel meetings as and when called by Ministry.
  8. Reply to Parliament Matters / RTI Cases/CPGRAM.
  9. Updating information in the following publications/reports:
    • Water Resources Sector at a Glance
    • Water and related statistics
    • Annual Report, CWC
    • Annual Report, MoWR,RD&GR

Inter State Matters:


  1. Matters relating to inter-state water disputes, court cases, tribunal awards, agreements etc. as well as assisting the Ministry of Water Resources in these matters.
  2. Secretariat works pertaining to Babhali Barrage on river Godavari
  3. Formulation / review of various existing and proposed constitutional provision / water related acts/laws in the country.
  4. Examination of various existing and proposed water laws in the country
  5. Examination of major and medium irrigation and power projects from interstate angle including NWDA reports referred to Central Water Commission.
  6. Preparation of guidelines for allocation of surface waters of interstate rivers.
  7. Work relating to various Zonal Council Meetings and
  8. Documentation of various interstate and international agreements and tribunal awards, water laws/water rights etc.
  9. Matters related to international laws dealing with trans-boundary rivers; international treaties with neighboring countries; water issues in United Nations; cooperation with other countries in water sector and burning issues related to Centre-State relationship.

Functions/Works of Irrigation Planning


  1. Technical scrutiny/appraisal of basic planning and irrigation planning aspects including economic viability of major irrigation and multipurpose water resources development projects including ERM projects .
  2. Examination of water balance studies and feasibility reports of the above mentioned seven states prepared by NWDA.
  3. Promoting among stakeholders the use of e-tools like CROPWAT/CLIMWAT developed by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for estimation of crop water requirement as per cropping pattern practiced/proposed in command area.
  4. Nodal directorate for beneficiaries Participation Programme and studies for assessing the irrigation benefits.
  5. Promotion among stakeholders the use of e-tool like CROPWAT for estimation of crop water requirement as per cropping pattern practiced/proposed in command area.
  6. Secretariat work of Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) headed by Member (WP&P), CWC constituted by MoWR, RD & GR for completion of balance works of North Koel Project, Bihar & Jharkhand.
