Basin Details : Mahi & Tapi Basin Organisation
Hydrological Observation and Flood Forecasting activities in 16 river basins of Gujarat, parts of Madhyapradesh, Maharashtra, & Rajasthan are carried out under Mahi & Tapi Basin Organization (MTBO). The 16 basins coming under jurisdiction of MTBO are Ambica Basin, Banas basin, Bhadar basin, Damanganga basin, Dhadhar basin, Kim basin, Lower Narmada basin, Luni basin, Machchu basin, Mahi Basin, Purna Basin Rupen basin, Sabarmati basin, Shretrunji Basin, Tapi Basin and Vaitarna basin.
Ambica Basin
Ambica River is one of the important west flowing rivers with its catchment in Gujarat and Maharashtra. It originates from Saputara Hill ranges, after flowing for a length of 136 km it drains in to the Arabian Sea. The river Ambica basin lies between 20º 31’ and 20º 57’ North latitude and 72º 48’ and 73º 52’ East longitude with a drainage area of 2715 Sq.km. The important tributaries of the Ambica River are Kapri, Wallan, Kaveri and Kharera.
Banas Basin
Banas River originates from Aravalli hills and descends in a south-western direction through Rajasthan state and travels through Banaskantha and Mehsana district of Gujarat before it drains into little Rann of Kutchh. The Banas Basin is the northern Basin and is situated between 23.5 to 24.92 degrees North latitudes and 71.25 to 73.25 degrees East longitudes approximately. The main tributaries are Sipu, Khari, Skli, Batria, Sewaran, Suket and Balaram.
Bhadar Basin
Bhadar is one of the major rivers of Saurashtra. The Bhadar Basin is the south western basin and situated between 21.42º to 22.17º North latitude and 69.75º to 71.33º East longitude. The Bhadar drains an area of 7094 sq km out of which 706 sq km in hilly and the rest in plain regions of Saurastra. There are 9 major tributaries, Gondali, Chapparwadi, Phopal, Utawali, Moj, Venu, Vasavadi, Surwa and Galolia.
Damanganga Basin
The Damanganga river rises in the Sahyadri hill ranges and traverses a total distance of about 131.30 km before it drains into the Arabian Sea at Daman. The important tributaries of the Damanganga river are Dawan, Shrimant, Val, Rayte, Lendi, Vagh, Sakartond, Dongarkhadi, Roshni and Dudhni.
Dhadhar Basin
The Dhadhar River is one of the west flowing rivers in Gujarat state. It originates from the Pavagadh Hills of Gujarat state and flows through Vadodara and Bharuch districts. The important tributaries of the Dhadhar River are Vishwamitri, Jambuoriver, Dev and Surya River. It lies between east longitude 72º30’ and 73º 45’ and North latitude 21º 45’ and 22º 45’. Ajwa tank, Pratap pura, Uma Bhariara, Dhanora, Ghansarva, Haripura, Vadodara, Deo Dam are the medium existing/ongoing projects in the basin.
Kim Basin
Kim River is one of the west flowing rivers in Gujarat state. It originates from Saputara Hill ranges in Bharuch district and falls in Gulf of Khambhat. The river basin lies between21º 19’ to 21º 38’ North latitude and 72º 40’ to 73º 27’ East longitude. The main tributaries of Kim river are Ghanta river and Tokri river. There are 2 major and medium projects completed / ongoing on Kim river basin.
Lower Narmada Basin
River Narmada is the fifth largest river of India. Lower Narma Basin extends over an area of about 98796 sq.km and lies between East Longitude 73º00’26"E to 76º02’ 20" E and 21º41’22"N to 22º 13’ 50" N Latitude. The basin covers large area in the states of Madhyapradesh, Gujarat and comparitively small area in Maharashtra. There are 41 important tributaries of Narmada River. The major tributaries joining from left are the Burhner, the Banjar, the Sher, the Shakkar, the Dudhi, the Tawa, the Ganjal, the Chhota Tawa, the Kundi, the Goi and the Karjan. The major tributaries joining from right are the Gaur, the Hiran, the Barna, the Tindoni, the Kolar, the Chankeshwar, the Kanar, the Man, the Uri and the Orsang .
Luni Basin
Luni originates from western slopes of the Aravalli and it finally flows into the Rann of Kachchh. Luni Basin is situated in between 24.18 to 26.72 degrees North latitude and 70.62 to 74.65 degrees East longitude approximately. The main tributaries are Jojari (Mithri), Lilari, Guhiya, Bandi (Hemawas), Sukri (Hemawas), Sukri, Mithri, Jawai, Khari Bandi, Sukri Bandi and Sugi.
Machchu Basin
This is one of the north flowing rivers of Saurashtra in Gujarat state. The Machhu basin is situated between 22.17 to 23.17 degrees North latitude and 70.67 to 71.25 degrees East longitude. There are 6 major tributaries namely Jamburi, Benia, Machhori, Maha, Beti and Asoi.
Mahi Basin
Mahi River is one of the major west flowing inter-state River of India, draining into the gulf of Khambhat. Mahi River originates on the northern slope of Vindhyas at latitude 22º35’N and longitude 74º 58’E. Total drainage area of Mahi is 34,842 sqkm. The main tributaries are Som, Anas and Panam. There are 15 completed major/medium irrigation/multi purpose projects in Mahi Basin. Important projects are Mahi Bajaj Sagar, Kadana reservoir,Wanakbori weir & Panam reservoir.
Purna Basin
Purna River is an important west flowing river. The basin lies between 72º 45’ to 74º 00’ East longitude and 20º 41’ to 21º 05’ North latitude. The important tributaries of the Purna River are Dhodar nala, Bardanala, Nagihpar nala, Girna River, Zankari River and Dumas khadi.
Rupen Basin
Rupen River originates from taranga hill ranges. The Rupen Basin is a northern Basin of Gujarat and is situated between 23º 25’ to 24º 00’ north latitude and 71º 30’ to 72º 46’ east longitude approximately. Pushpavathi and Khari are two major tributaries of Rupen River.
Sabarmati Basin
Sabarmati River is one of the major west flowing inter-state rivers in india, draining into the gulf of Khambhat. It originates in the Aravalli hills at latitude 24.67 degrees N and longitude 73.33 degrees E. The main tributaries are Sei, Wakal, Harnav, Hatmati & Watrak. There are 13 completed major/medium irrigation/multi purpose projects in Mahi Basin. Important projects are Dharoi Project & Watrak Project.
Shetrunji Basin
The Shetrunji is one of the major Rivers of Saurastra. The Shetrunji basin is the eastern most basin of Saurastra and is situated in between 21º to 21.78º North latitude and 70.83º to 72.17º East longitude. The total length of this east flowing river from its origin to the outfall into the Gulf of Khambhat is 182 km. The major tributaries are Safara, Shel, Khari, Talaji, Stali, Thebu, Gagadia, Rajwal and Kharo.
Tapi Basin
The basin lies between longitudes of 72º 38’ to 78º E; 17’ and latitudes of 20º 05’ to 22º03'N. The important tributaries namely Nesu, Arunavati, Buray, Panjhra, Bori, Girna, Vaghur, Purna, Mona, Sipna, Vaki, Gomai, Arunavati and Aner. At present there are 28 Major and Medium Irrigation schemes completed and 2 projects are in under construction in the form of reservoirs or weirs in the Tapi catchment. The important projects in Tapi Basin is Hatnur Dam (Maharashtra), Kakrapar Weir (Gujarat), Ukai Dam (Gujarat), Girna Dam (Maharashtra) and Dahigam Weir (Maharashta).
Vaitarna Basin
The river Vaitarna is one of the west flowing rivers in the region North of Mumbai and South of the Tapi River. The river rises in the Sahyadri hill range. The Vaitarna basin lies between East longitude of 72º 45’ to 73º 35’ and North latitude of 19º 25’to 20º 20’. The main tributaries of Vaitarna river are Pinjal, Ganjai, Surya, Daharji, Tansa. There are some major and medium projects completed & some other projects are ongoing on Vaitarna river basin.
